Frank Nicias Mitchell enlisted in the Marine Corps from Texas in 1939, served through the Pacific war, and was a first lieutenant leading a rifle platoon in Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, when the Chosin Reservoir fight opened in late November 1950.

Near Yudam-ni / Hagsang-ni, after his company was ordered to pull back, he stayed on a Browning Automatic Rifle and grenades to cover Marines trying to bring out their dead. He was mortally wounded. The tactical situation kept the unit from evacuating his body. He has not been identified among remains returned after the ceasefire.
