Frank Luke Jr.

Frank Luke Jr. flew a short war and a hard specialty. Observation balloons were defended, valuable, and hated. Luke went after them with the 27th Aero Squadron in September 1918, in the weeks after St. Mihiel and into the Meuse-Argonne. The Army credited him with eighteen victories, many of them balloons, in a span measured in days rather than months.

On September 29, 1918, he was forced down near Murvaux after attacking balloons. German troops found him dead. The Medal of Honor citation describes the last flight and the refusal to surrender after landing. He was twenty-one. The citation is the public record this page will use. It will not invent last words or a duel in a field that the Army did not write down.

He was born in Phoenix, Arizona Territory, on May 19, 1897. He is buried at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. That is a grave. This register will not relabel a combat death as missing in action to thicken an MIA list. A Phoenix kid chose the most dangerous targets in the air war and did not come back. The official score, the date, and the place are enough.

The photograph is a wartime likeness. This page will not turn a balloon buster into a myth. It will say the Air Service counted the balloons, the Army wrote the medal, and the file closes on a named cemetery in France. Eighteen credited victories in a September measured in days is already enough without a later legend. The specialty was balloons. The cost was the man.
