Samuel Woodfill

Samuel Woodfill was a peacetime Regular who knew the boredom of garrison life long before the AEF crossed to France. As a first lieutenant in the 60th Infantry, 5th Division, he led an attack near Cunel on October 12, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne. The Medal of Honor citation records him clearing successive German machine-gun nests at close range with rifle and pistol so his company could keep moving through wire and mud when the offensive was stalling.

Pershing later named him among the outstanding soldiers of the American Expeditionary Forces — praise written into the public record, not invented here. Woodfill returned to Indiana after the war, stayed tied to the Army, and is buried at Arlington.
