Frankfort: 34,000 pounds of donated food arrives for Feeding Kentucky pantries
Gov. Andy Beshear and First Lady Britainy Beshear helped unload a truckload of shelf-stable food from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Frankfort on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026. Feeding Kentucky will send it out through food banks that serve all 120 counties.
A semi-trailer load of donated food, about 34,000 pounds of it, was unloaded in Frankfort on Monday morning, Oct. 12, 2026. Gov. Andy Beshear and First Lady Britainy Beshear joined volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help take it off the truck, according to the governor's office.
The food goes to Feeding Kentucky, the statewide nonprofit that works with seven partner food banks covering all 120 Kentucky counties. Those food banks supply more than 900 pantries and meal programs, and Feeding Kentucky estimates it reaches about 1 in 7 Kentuckians in a year.
The load is all shelf-stable: canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, flour, pancake mix and dried milk. The governor's office said most of it is produced by the Church itself and paid for by voluntary donations from its members.
Kentucky's truck is one of 250. The Church is sending 250 truckloads of food to 250 food banks around the country to mark America250, the nation's 250th anniversary.
Gov. Beshear thanked the Church and Feeding Kentucky and said the food comes at a time when more families are struggling with rising costs and changes to SNAP food benefits. The First Lady said that, as a mom, it is hard to picture any child going hungry or parents skipping meals to stretch groceries, and that the donation will help families and seniors around the state.
Steven Bodhaine, a regional leader for the Church, said the effort grows out of the call to love your neighbor, and that members hope the food also tells families they are cared for. Melissa McDonald, executive director of Feeding Kentucky, said food insecurity is not only a rural problem: her network is seeing more working people, including some with middle-class wages, who cannot keep up with the cost of living. She said donations like this one turn into thousands of meals.
