Glen Ridge: new Boxcar commuter bus to Midtown Manhattan starts Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026

The Borough of Glen Ridge in Essex County, New Jersey, says a reserved-seat commuter bus up Grove Street to Midtown Manhattan begins Oct. 13 while NJ Transit Portal Bridge work reroutes Montclair-Boonton Midtown Direct trains to Hoboken.

The Borough of Glen Ridge, in Essex County, New Jersey, announced that a new commuter bus from Glen Ridge to Midtown Manhattan starts on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026. The private operator Boxcar is running it as the Gaslamp branch of its Essex Express service, named for the borough's gas street lamps.

The route is meant to cover the period while NJ Transit's Portal Bridge work sends Midtown Direct trains on the Montclair-Boonton Line into Hoboken instead of Manhattan.

Three buses leave Glen Ridge each morning. The 6:05 a.m. and 7:12 a.m. buses leave from the Glen Ridge Post Office at the train station, after first stopping a few minutes earlier at Ridgewood and Linden avenues; they reach Port Authority at about 6:53 a.m. and 8:23 a.m. The 8:20 a.m. bus starts at the NJ Transit bus stop in front of the Glen Ridge Municipal Building on Bloomfield Avenue, skips the Ridgewood Avenue stops to stay out of school traffic, and reaches Port Authority at about 9:31 a.m.

In the morning the buses run up Grove Street to Route 3 and the Lincoln Tunnel, then drop off at Port Authority, Bryant Park, and Madison Avenue at 43rd, 47th, 52nd and 57th streets.

Three buses head home each evening, leaving Lexington Avenue between 57th and 58th streets at 4:05, 5:25 and 7:15 p.m. They pick up at Lexington and 52nd, Lexington and 48th, Grand Central (42nd Street under the Park Avenue bridge), the Grace Building on 42nd Street, and 42nd and 8th. They reach Grove and Charles at about 5:12, 6:32 and 8:04 p.m., and Ridgewood and Linden at about 5:41, 7:02 and 8:31 p.m. In the evening the Municipal Building stop is across Bloomfield Avenue from the building.

Local stops include Ridgewood and Linden, Ridgewood and Winsor Place, the Glen Ridge Post Office, the Municipal Building, Bay Street (Bloomfield Avenue at Pine Street in Montclair), and Grove Street stops at Walnut (north of the rail crossing), Chestnut, Dodd, Watchung, Mt. Vernon, Bellevue, Inwood and Alexander, the Water Treatment Plant, and Grove and Charles.
