Ontario County, N.Y., asks residents to take its food waste and organics survey by Oct. 26
Ontario County, New York, is writing an Organics Management Plan to guide future food waste programs, and is asking residents to fill out a survey about how they handle food scraps and yard waste at home. The survey is open through Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, on OntarioCountyRecycles.org.
Ontario County, New York, wants to hear from residents about food scraps and other organic waste. The county has opened a residents' survey for its new Organics Management Plan, and it is available through Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, from the OntarioCountyRecycles.org website. The Town of Geneva shared the county's announcement with its residents by email.
What the plan is for. The Organics Management Plan will give the Ontario County Board of Supervisors data and recommendations for future decisions about keeping food waste out of the trash and handling it responsibly. The county says it will shape future waste diversion programs and policies.
Who is doing the study. The county hired MSW Consultants to measure how much organic material different groups produce, what composting and processing capacity already exists, where the gaps are, which handling technologies could work and whether neighboring areas could team up.
What the survey asks. Carla Jordan, director of the Ontario County Department of Sustainability and Solid Waste Management, said the county wants to understand how residents handle organic waste at home now and which food waste programs they would be willing to use. She said the answers will help the county weigh its options.
More outreach is coming. Besides the residents' survey, the county plans surveys, virtual meetings and workshops with other groups, such as businesses and institutions, as the plan is written.
How to take part. Go to OntarioCountyRecycles.org and follow the survey link on the home page before Oct. 26. Questions about recycling and waste go to the county at 585-393-3090.
