Clackamas County plans an updated Public Safety Levy for the May 2027 ballot and asks residents to take a survey by Nov. 15
The Clackamas County Board of Commissioners, working with the Sheriff’s Office, says it intends to put an updated Public Safety Levy before voters in May 2027. Before deciding on a measure, the county is running an online resident survey through Nov. 15, 2026, and plans polling, a town hall and a community committee.
Clackamas County announced on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, that the Board of County Commissioners, in collaboration with the Sheriff’s Office, intends to present an updated Public Safety Levy to voters in the May 2027 election.
Background. The county says it made the decision after reviewing the May 2026 election and the county’s public safety needs, and that it is still reviewing options for the levy package. The Public Safety Levy was first passed in 2006 and has supported law enforcement services for 20 years.
What the levy pays for. Sheriff James Rhodes says the levy funds 17% of the Sheriff’s Office’s essential services. The county says the levy has historically paid for rapid response to 911 calls, a specialized drug enforcement team, crime prevention and investigations (including property crime and theft, elder and child abuse, and human trafficking), and resources to keep the jail operating.
Resident survey through Nov. 15. Before making a final decision to refer a measure, the county has launched an online survey asking residents about their public safety priorities. Submissions are accepted until Nov. 15, 2026, and the county plans to distribute the survey across its communities.
More outreach. The county also plans quantitative polling, a town hall, and a community-engagement committee of local government, business and nonprofit leaders from the cities and unincorporated areas.
