Portland: Springwater wetland project wins national flood-protection award

Portland Environmental Services' Springwater Wetland Restoration Project near Johnson Creek took first place in its category of a 2026 national award for projects that pair flood protection with habitat and public benefits.

The City of Portland says its Springwater Wetland Restoration Project has won first place in the large-population category of the 2026 Innovative Water Projects Award from the National Association of Flood and Stormwater Management Agencies (NAFSMA).

The project sits just north of Johnson Creek in the Lents and Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhoods. Construction began in spring 2024 and finished in summer 2025. It restored about 18 acres of urban wetland and added more than 44,000 native trees, shrubs and other plants.

By widening the wetlands, the project gives Johnson Creek more room to spread out in public green space when it rises, which the city says lowers flood risk for nearby homes and businesses, improves water quality and creates habitat for frogs, salamanders, birds and bats. Crews also reused clean soil and historic Works Progress Administration stone from other restoration sites.
