Safety Standard for Lithium-Ion Batteries Used in Micromobility Products and Electrical Systems of Micromobility Products Containing Such Batteries

CPSC opens a virtual oral-comment session October 21, 2026, on its proposed lithium-ion battery standard for micromobility products. Requests due October 15. FR 2026-20296.

E-bike and e-scooter batteries get a public hearing this month. The Consumer Product Safety Commission will hold a virtual session starting at 10 a.m. Eastern on October 21, 2026, where people can speak about its proposed lithium-ion battery safety standard.

Some background: CPSC proposed the rule on June 24, 2026. It covers lithium-ion batteries in micromobility products and the electrical systems that use them. The worry is thermal runaway — when a cell overheats and can cause fires, explosions, gas releases, burns and smoke inhalation. The proposal would require these systems to meet existing voluntary standards, with changes.

Want to speak? Send a request, along with the written text of what you plan to say, to CPSC’s Office of the Secretary by 5 p.m. Eastern on October 15, 2026. You must also pre-register by that same deadline. Remarks have to stay within the scope of the proposed rule. The docket is CPSC-2025-0012.

Spoken comments become part of the official rulemaking record, just like written ones. Riders, repair shops, retailers and fire officials all have a stake in what the final standard says.
