Request for Information (RFI) on Future Needs for Medical Metrology and Standards for Medical Imaging, Devices, Diagnostics and Therapy

NIST and NIH’s imaging institute want input on the measurements and standards behind medical scans, devices and tests. Comments due November 30, 2026. FR 2026-19147.

When an MRI shows a tumor shrinking, how sure can the doctor be that the change is real and not the machine? That question is at the heart of a request for information from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

NIST and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), part of NIH, are asking for input on future needs for “medical metrology” — the science of precise, repeatable measurement — and standards in medical imaging, devices, diagnostics and therapy. The answers will feed a joint roadmap that names future needs, key players and guidance for government programs.

The notice says health care is 18 percent of U.S. GDP, projected to reach 20.6 percent by 2034, and that fast-moving technology and artificial intelligence may change what measurement standards are needed. A related symposium was held September 24, 2026, in Rockville, Maryland.

Comments are due by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on November 30, 2026, at www.regulations.gov under docket NIST-2026-0133. Everything submitted will be posted publicly without redaction, so leave out private information.

Hospitals, device makers, lab staff and patient groups can all respond. The contact is Stephen Russek in Boulder, Colorado, at 303-497-5097.
