George Henry Thomas

Virginia-born George H. Thomas stayed with the Union and made his reputation holding ground when others broke. At Chickamauga on September 19–20, 1863, his corps anchored the federal left after the right collapsed; Army reports and later Official Records language fixed the nickname “Rock of Chickamauga” to that stand. In December 1864, commanding the Army of the Cumberland, he shattered Hood’s army at Nashville — a winter battle planned on his timetable, not Grant’s impatience alone.
