Philip Sheridan’s Civil War file turns on speed more than speeches. In the Shenandoah in autumn 1864 he beat Early at Third Winchester and, after a near-rout at Cedar Creek on October 19, rode back from Winchester to restore the line — the ride itself enters the Official Records and contemporary dispatches, not only later verse. In spring 1865 his cavalry seized Five Forks and helped seal Lee’s retreat toward Appomattox.
Postwar western commands and the general-in-chief years are other chapters. This register keeps the 1864–65 eastern record: Shenandoah battles, Five Forks, the closing pursuit. Sheridan died at Nonquitt, Massachusetts, in 1888 and is buried at Arlington. The restored public-domain portrait on Wikimedia Commons is used here. He is not marked missing.
