Jared Christopher Monti was a Massachusetts soldier and artillery forward observer with 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry, 10th Mountain Division, when his patrol came under heavy fire in Nuristan Province on June 21, 2006. The Medal of Honor citation describes him repeatedly leaving cover to try to reach a wounded comrade exposed under enemy fire; he was killed on the third attempt. The award was presented posthumously in 2009 — the first Army Medal of Honor for actions in Afghanistan.
