Robert J. Miller was a Special Forces weapons sergeant with ODA 3312, 3rd Special Forces Group, when his team and Afghan partners were ambushed near Gowardesh in Kunar Province on January 25, 2008. After calling fire and moving to exposed ground, he charged the enemy positions, drawing fire so teammates and Afghan soldiers could break contact; he was killed in that fight. The Medal of Honor citation (presented October 6, 2010) fixes the date, unit, and valley — Army after-action language, not invention.
