Joseph Wheeler returned to U.S. blue in 1898 after a Confederate cavalry career and long House service from Alabama. As major general of volunteers commanding the cavalry division of Shafter’s V Corps in Cuba, he fought at Las Guasimas on June 24 and stayed in the San Juan Heights fighting that opened the Santiago siege — dates fixed in V Corps reports and the War Department’s Santiago campaign papers. Illness briefly sidelined him; the commission and the ground remain on the record.
