Pilot of B-17 42-5807 lost October 4, 1943 on return from a Frankfurt mission; aircraft crashed in the North Sea near Vlissingen, Holland. Two crew remains later recovered and identified; eight including Nauman remain unrecovered. Memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten. Non-recoverable is not a recovered grave.

Daniel Dorland Nauman was born in Evanston, Illinois, on May 11, 1920, and entered the Air Corps from Wisconsin. By October 1943 he was a first lieutenant piloting B-17s with the 511th Bombardment Squadron of the 351st Bombardment Group from England.

On October 4 his Fortress — serial 42-5807, called Minor Ball — went against Frankfurt. On the way home the bomber went into the North Sea east of Vlissingen. Two men from the ten-man crew later washed ashore and were identified. Nauman was not among them. The water never gave the rest of the crew back.

DPAA profile a0Jt000001nzSKbEAM still lists him Unaccounted For, analytical category Non-recoverable. He is on the Walls of the Missing at Margraten. A finding of death closed a personnel file. It did not bring a body home from the Scheldt.
