Harold W. Bauer

Harold William Bauer left Woodruff, Kansas, for Annapolis and a Marine cockpit. By the Guadalcanal campaign of 1942 he was a lieutenant colonel commanding Marine Fighting Squadron 212 — Hellcats in the ready-room talk, Wildcats in the air — flying from the Cactus strip while the island was still a knife-fight for every gallon of fuel and every serviceable airplane. The Medal of Honor citation covers the months from May 10 to November 14: intercepts over the Slot, attacks that broke Japanese formations working the transports and the destroyers, and a pilot who kept leading when the squadron was thin.

On November 14, 1942, after combat covering the naval fight around Guadalcanal, Bauer went into the water near the Russell Islands. Other Marines saw him in the sea. Search aircraft worked the area for days. They did not bring him back. The Marine Corps entered a finding of death in 1946. That paperwork closed a personnel file; it did not produce remains.

He is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery. This register lists him because the casualty report and the Wall of the Missing say a squadron commander never came home — not because Guadalcanal needed another famous name. An administrative finding of death is not a grave. The documentation is a ditched Wildcat, a search that found nothing, and a ledger that still has no identified recovery.
