Jack Lummus left Texas football and a brief NFL tryout for the Marine Corps. As a first lieutenant in the 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division, he led his rifle platoon on Iwo Jima on March 8, 1945. The Medal of Honor citation describes him single-handedly destroying enemy strongpoints that had stalled the advance, then continuing despite wounds until a land mine killed him. The award was posthumous.
