In Frederick, on October 20, 2004, Albert Earl Guggenheim died at 73. Born on July 15, 1931 and raised among German-American manners that never needed a speech. He learned early that a day is something you finish, not something you wait for.
He painted pipe that had to look inevitable on racks. A pipe yard paint brush wrapped meant tomorrow would not invent grades. Colleagues still mention a pipe yard paint brush wrapped.
He married Dorothy in 1956. They kept a house that stayed modest when the neighborhood did not. They raised two children through public schools and ordinary weather. After Dorothy died in 1997, he kept the routines that still made sense: the walk, the garden, the Sunday call.
Neighbors remember the radio low on a Saturday while repairs got done. Mornings were his favorite shift at home. He died in Frederick, on streets that already knew his pace. The Sunday call still has a time slot in the house.
