On April 1, 2008, Doyle Neil Hornbaker died at home in Reno. He was 78. Born November 20, 1929 in Reno, carrying Finnish-American stories that arrived without footnotes. Young, he understood that quiet competence outlasts loud plans.
He graded chicks until charts agreed and pride could return. A hatchery grader glove clip meant the next hand could trust the last. Colleagues still mention a hatchery grader glove clip.
In 1955 he married Joyce. The marriage was not a speech; it was groceries, repairs, and two children walked to school in weather that did not care. When Joyce died in 2001, he kept what still worked: the early walk, the small garden, the call on Sundays.
Neighbors remember coffee offered before questions. He preferred the hour before a town fully wakes. Reno was home enough that he never rehearsed an introduction. The Sunday call still has a time slot in the house.
What remains is not a legend but a practice: showing up, keeping a promise, leaving a place better than you found it. His life was the kind America is built from and too often forgets to name.
