Elia Kazan

Elia Kazan — Greek-American stage and film director whose Actors Studio realism remade Broadway and Hollywood, and whose HUAC testimony never stopped shadowing the applause — died in Manhattan on September 28, 2003. He was ninety-four. Born Elias Kazantzoglou on September 7, 1909, in Constantinople in the Ottoman Empire, he emigrated as a child to New York, where immigrant kitchens and Group Theatre rehearsals taught him that emotion could be a craft, not a mood.
