Eugene Ray Noffsinger died in Syracuse on September 21, 2019. He was 81. Born August 10, 1938 in Syracuse, carrying Italian-American stories that arrived without footnotes. Early on, he decided that a paycheck and a handshake should weigh the same.
He tended hoppers that shook the plant into a rhythm. An ash hopper poke bar wrapped preferred work over speeches. Colleagues still mention an ash hopper poke bar wrapped.
In 1964 he married Margaret. The marriage was not a speech; it was groceries, repairs, and two daughters walked to school in weather that did not care. When Margaret died in 2012, he kept what still worked: the early walk, the small garden, the call on Sundays.
Neighbors remember coffee offered before questions. He liked early mornings before the heat or the noise. He died in Syracuse, among streets he never needed to explain. The Sunday call still has a time slot in the house.
What remains is not a legend but a practice: showing up, keeping a promise, leaving a place better than you found it. His life was the kind America is built from and too often forgets to name.
