On June 7, 2011, Evelyn Lou Shoemake died at home in Little Rock. She was 77. Born in Little Rock on August 13, 1933, into a Polish-American household that treated work as a language. She learned early that a day is something you finish, not something you wait for.
She kept sheets that turned seed into wages without inventing weights. A gin seed house ticket spindle ended arguments more gently than speeches. Colleagues still mention a gin seed house ticket spindle.
She married William in 1955. They kept a house that stayed modest when the neighborhood did not. They raised three children through public schools and ordinary weather. After William died in 2004, she kept the routines that still made sense: the walk, the garden, the Sunday call.
Neighbors remember someone who swept the sidewalk past the property line when weather had been unfair. She preferred the hour before a town fully wakes. Little Rock was home enough that she never rehearsed an introduction. The lunch pail still waits by the back door.
Services
A memorial gathering in Little Rock with coffee afterward. In lieu of flowers, a gift to a local workers' fund, clinic, or neighborhood library is welcome.
