Harriet Nelson — born Peggy Lou Snyder, American actress and singer who became television's model of the mid-century mother without surrendering a working performer's spine — died in Laguna Beach, California, on October 2, 1994. She was eighty-five. Born July 18, 1909, in Des Moines, Iowa, she sang with Ozzie Nelson's band as Harriet Hilliard, acted in films including Follow the Fleet, then helped invent the family sitcom with The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet on radio and ABC television.
For fourteen television seasons America watched Ozzie, Harriet, David, and Ricky turn a living room into a national habit. She later appeared in Ozzie's Girls and guest roles, then settled full-time at the family's Laguna Beach home. Congestive heart failure ended her life there; she rests at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills with Ozzie and Ricky.
Iowa gave her the stage start; California gave her the long run. She performed as if domestic comedy could still be work.
She died in Laguna Beach on October 2, 1994. Somewhere a black-and-white living room is still waiting for the theme to finish.
Nelson's gift was durable warmth — making family television feel like next door. Notice Nearby keeps the death date so October 2 remembers the Des Moines singer who mothered a nation's weeknights.
