On October 1, 2006, Hubert Earl Immel died at home in Roanoke. He was 74. Born October 5, 1931 in Roanoke, carrying Irish-American stories that arrived without footnotes. He learned early that a day is something you finish, not something you wait for. He pulled blocks that festivals and piecework needed with equal care. An ice block tongs chalked outlasted two captains. Colleagues still mention ice block tongs chalked. In 1957 he married Helen. The marriage was not a speech; it was groceries, repairs, and three daughters walked to school in weather that did not care. When Helen died in 1999, he kept what still worked: the early walk, the small garden, the call on Sundays. Neighbors remember coffee offered before questions. He liked early mornings before the heat or the noise. He died in Roanoke, among streets he never needed to explain. The Sunday call still has a time slot in the house. What remains is not a legend but a practice: showing up, keeping a promise, leaving a place better than you found it. His life was the kind America is built from and too often forgets to name.
