Lester Lynn Overbey of Hartford died on June 13, 2013 at the age of 76. He was born on August 15, 1936 in a Czech-American family that measured love in finished chores. Young, he understood that quiet competence outlasts loud plans.
He cut ferns until trays looked inevitable on trucks. A fernery cutter knife sheath oiled decided what the shed could sell. Colleagues still mention a fernery cutter knife sheath oiled.
He married Frances in 1958. They kept a house that stayed modest when the neighborhood did not. They raised three daughters through public schools and ordinary weather. After Frances died in 2006, he kept the routines that still made sense: the walk, the garden, the Sunday call.
Neighbors remember quiet help with a stuck mailbox or a heavy trash can. He liked early mornings before the heat or the noise. He died in Hartford, among streets he never needed to explain. The garden will come up next spring without being told.
