Oscar Roy Quigley of Charleston died on July 6, 2010 at the age of 71. He was born on January 2, 1939 in a German-American family that measured love in finished chores. He learned early that a day is something you finish, not something you wait for.
He striped roads that strangers would trust without knowing his name. A stripe crew paint tip kit meant the station would not guess. Colleagues still mention a stripe crew paint tip kit.
He married Dorothy in 1961. They kept a house that stayed modest when the neighborhood did not. They raised two daughters through public schools and ordinary weather. After Dorothy died in 2003, he kept the routines that still made sense: the walk, the garden, the Sunday call.
Neighbors remember quiet help with a stuck mailbox or a heavy trash can. He liked early mornings before the heat or the noise. He died in Charleston, among streets he never needed to explain. The garden will come up next spring without being told.
Services
A memorial gathering in Charleston with coffee afterward. In lieu of flowers, a gift to a local workers' fund, clinic, or neighborhood library is welcome.
