Heavy rain is causing flash flooding in Berkeley County and Charleston County, South Carolina. The National Weather Service in Charleston first issued this Flash Flood Warning at about 7:58 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, and continued it at 8:31 p.m. EDT. It remains in effect until 11:00 p.m. EDT the same evening. That end time is 8:00 p.m. Pacific. North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Downtown Charleston, Daniel Island, James Island, West Ashley, Johns Island, Hollywood, Charleston Naval Complex, and Charles Towne Landing are named. Radar showed thunderstorms with 2 to 4 inches already fallen and 1 to 3 inches more possible. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected. Creeks, city streets, highways, underpasses, and low spots can flood. The warning covers Berkeley and Charleston counties as listed on the bulletin, not every acre of South Carolina.

What to do: do not drive through water on the road. Turn around, don’t drown. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Six inches of moving water can knock a person down. A foot or two of moving water can float a car. You cannot tell the depth from the driver’s seat. Be especially cautious at night, when it is harder to see flooding. Stay off flooded underpasses and low spots until the warning ends. If you are in a low spot, move to higher ground. If you are trapped, call 911. If you can report flooding safely, tell local emergency services and ask them to pass the report to the National Weather Service. Do not treat 11:00 p.m. EDT as an all-clear until weather.gov says the warning is over.

The warning, in plain words

The sender is the National Weather Service office in Charleston, South Carolina. The AWIPS product on the live alert is FFSCHS. The headline on the continued product says the Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 11:00 p.m. EDT this evening for Berkeley and Charleston counties.

Severity is Severe. Urgency is Immediate. Certainty is Likely. The message type on the live alert is Update. The status is Actual. The action on the VTEC line is continuation (CON), not a brand-new warning number. The VTEC string is /O.CON.KCHS.FF.W.0020.000000T0000Z-261005T0300Z/. The World Meteorological Organization line on the continued product is WGUS72 KCHS 050031.

The hazard line says flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. The source line says radar indicated. The detection parameter says radar indicated.

The impact line names small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Water can cover a road with no warning.

The county codes on the alert are SCC015 for Berkeley County and SCC019 for Charleston County. The SAME codes are 045015 and 045019. The FIPS codes used on this page are 45015 and 45019. The alert id is urn:oid:2.49.0.1.840.0.79668bc24367d120360b7e80d6574c5d4947622d.001.1.

The Weather Service instruction is short: turn around, don’t drown when you meet a flooded road. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.

Which counties

This is one product for two counties. The bulletin names Berkeley County, South Carolina, and Charleston County, South Carolina.

It is not a warning for every county in the Charleston forecast area. Read the county list on weather.gov if you live outside Berkeley or Charleston.

The rain line is on the official text. Between 2 and 4 inches have already fallen. Additional rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is possible in the warned area. That is the Weather Service figure, not a second clock.

This page names the counties and communities only. It does not print a street address, a house number, or a numbered highway as a destination.

Places the warning names

The warning says some locations that will experience the flash flooding include North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Downtown Charleston, Daniel Island, James Island, West Ashley, Johns Island, Hollywood, Charleston Naval Complex, and Charles Towne Landing.

Those ten names are the only place names copied from the bulletin onto this page. This page does not add towns the warning left out.

If your town is not on the list, you can still be in the warned area. The list is examples, not a fence. People outside Berkeley and Charleston counties are not inside this particular warning. Check weather.gov before you decide you are clear.

This page does not print a street address.
