Heavy thunderstorms have put a Flash Flood Warning on parts of Jefferson Parish and Orleans Parish. The National Weather Service says urban areas, creeks, highways, and underpasses can flood. Stay off flooded roads. Turn around, don’t drown.

The National Weather Service office in New Orleans issued this Flash Flood Warning at 11:47 a.m. CDT on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026. It lasts until 2:45 p.m. CDT the same day. That end time is 12:45 p.m. Pacific. If this page and weather.gov disagree, weather.gov wins.

The warning covers north-central Jefferson Parish and southwestern Orleans Parish, not every block in New Orleans or the whole of Jefferson Parish. It is one product, FFWLIX, with one clock. The live alert is a new Flash Flood Warning. A Flood Advisory from the same office was already in effect for a wider area that includes these parishes. This page is only the Flash Flood Warning. Read this clock on its own.

The warning, in plain words

The product code is FFWLIX. The sender is the National Weather Service office in New Orleans. The headline says the warning was issued October 4 at 11:47 a.m. CDT and lasts until October 4 at 2:45 p.m. CDT.

Severity is Severe. Urgency is Immediate. Certainty is Likely. The hazard line says flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. The source line says radar indicated. The live text product does not print a damage-threat word such as Considerable.

At 11:47 a.m. CDT, Doppler radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. Another 1 to 3 inches are possible. Flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

The impact line names small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other poor drainage and low-lying areas. In a city, a street can fill while the rain is still falling. You cannot tell the depth from the driver’s seat.

The parish codes on the alert are LAC051 for Jefferson and LAC071 for Orleans. The alert id is urn:oid:2.49.0.1.840.0.b8c59f0f5c4cedebbe1984126b29da349c9bf519.001.1.

The Weather Service instruction is short: turn around, don’t drown when you meet a flooded road. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.

Which part of each parish

This is not a warning for every acre of these parishes. The bulletin names a slice of each one.

North-central Jefferson Parish. Southwestern Orleans Parish. Both slices are in southeastern Louisiana, on the New Orleans side of the river and the lake.

If you live outside the named slice, you can still be close to it. Street water does not stop at a parish line. Check the live map on weather.gov if you are not sure.

A separate Flood Advisory from the same office can still cover a wider area, including St. Bernard Parish. That advisory is not this warning and it is not this clock. This page is only the Flash Flood Warning.

This page names parishes and places only. It does not print a street address.

Places the warning names

The warning says some locations that will experience the flash flooding include New Orleans, Gretna, and Lakefront Airport.

New Orleans is the city in Orleans Parish. Gretna is the city in Jefferson Parish. Lakefront Airport is a place the warning names in the New Orleans area. It is not a house number and it is not a street address.

This page does not add neighborhoods the warning left out. If your neighborhood is not on the list, you can still be in the warned area. The list is examples, not a fence.

This page does not print a street address, a house number, or a numbered highway as a destination.

What to do

Do not drive through water on the road. Six inches of moving water can knock you down. A foot or two can move a car. If you meet water, turn around.

Stay out of underpasses and low streets that are filling. If you are in a low spot in the warned part of Jefferson Parish or Orleans Parish, move to higher ground before the street becomes the creek.

The end time on this page is 2:45 p.m. CDT Sunday, which is 12:45 p.m. Pacific, unless the New Orleans office extends the warning. Do not treat the end time as an all-clear until weather.gov says the warning is over.

If you see flooding and you can do it safely, tell local emergency services or law enforcement and ask them to pass the report to the National Weather Service. Call 911 if you are trapped.

Recheck the warning before you travel Sunday afternoon. Check NWS New Orleans for updates.
