The Hoosier National Forest, part of the U.S. Forest Service, announced on October 6, 2026 that it and its conservation partners are proposing a new project in southern Indiana: the Sigler Creek Collaborative Woodlands and Wildlife Project.

According to the Forest Service release from Tell City, Indiana, the project covers national forest land in northern Perry County and southern Crawford County.

What the project would do

  • Restore open woodlands
  • Improve streams
  • Strengthen wildlife habitat, using what the Forest Service calls "proven land-management tools"

The Forest Service says the goal is a "vibrant, diverse and resilient ecosystem for generations to come," built together with local partners. The full list of proposed treatments and acreage is in the Proposed Action document posted on the Hoosier's projects page. Notice Nearby has not repeated numbers that are not in the release.

How to comment

  • Email: comments-eastern-hoosier@usda.gov
  • Mail: Hoosier National Forest, Attn: Sigler Creek Project, 248 15th Street, Tell City, IN 47586
  • Timing: preferably within 30 days of the October 6 release, which is about November 5, 2026
  • Questions: Travis Swaim, 812-547-7051, with "Sigler Creek Project" in the subject line

The Forest Service notes that comments, including commenters' names and addresses, become part of the public project record.

Why it matters locally

Neighbors, hunters, anglers and landowners next to the forest can weigh in now, at the proposal stage, before a decision. A new Forest Service rule effective November 12, 2026 shortens later objection periods, which makes early comments more important.
