National Weather Service Mobile: Hurricane Warning for Pensacola, Mobile and the Western Florida Panhandle as Isaias Nears, With 4 to 7 Feet of Possible Storm Surge

Where the warnings are

  • Storm Surge Warning and Hurricane Warning: Baldwin Central, Baldwin Coastal, Escambia Coastal, Mobile Central, Mobile Coastal, Okaloosa Coastal and Santa Rosa Coastal zones.
  • Hurricane Warning: Baldwin Inland, Conecuh, Covington, Escambia (AL), Escambia Inland, Mobile Inland, Okaloosa Inland and Santa Rosa Inland. Conecuh and Covington were upgraded from a Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning in the 10:09 p.m. CDT local statement.
  • Tropical Storm Warning: Butler, Clarke, Crenshaw, George, Greene, Monroe, Washington and Wilcox. Tropical Storm Watch: Choctaw, Perry, Stone and Wayne.
  • Marine Hurricane Warnings cover Mobile Bay, Mississippi Sound, Perdido Bay, Pensacola Bay and Santa Rosa Sound, Choctawhatchee Bay, and Gulf waters out to 60 nautical miles from Pascagoula to the Okaloosa-Walton line.

What NWS Mobile expects

  • In the 10:09 p.m. CDT Thursday statement, Isaias was about 370 miles south of Mobile and 360 miles south-southwest of Pensacola, with 105 mph winds, moving northeast at 14 mph.
  • NWS says Isaias should keep strengthening into Friday morning, then turn north and speed up toward the north-central Gulf Coast. It expects "a dangerous hurricane at landfall Friday night," somewhere on coastal Alabama or the western Florida Panhandle. It says it is too early to pin down the exact landfall spot.
  • Storm surge: peak inundation of 5 to 7 feet above normally dry ground is possible near and east of landfall. The Pensacola, Pensacola Beach and Perdido Bay warning lists 4 to 7 feet somewhere within surge-prone areas, with a window of concern through Saturday morning.
  • Wind: for Pensacola, a peak wind forecast of 65 to 85 mph with gusts to 115 mph, with hurricane-force winds possible from early Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning. NWS says to plan for life-threatening wind equal to a Category 1 or 2 hurricane.
  • Rain and tornadoes: an additional 4 to 8 inches of rain, locally higher, under a Flood Watch. NWS also warns of a possible dangerous tornado event east of the center.

NWS says evacuation orders have been issued in some coastal counties: "Leave immediately if evacuation orders are given for your area." It notes that during the storm, 911 may not be able to respond right away. Local emergency management contacts in the NWS statement:
