Nye County Commission Meets Oct. 6 in Tonopah: Forensic Audit Vote, Inmate-Death Prosecutor, Jail Food Contract and Solar Reviews
Nye County commissioners meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, in Tonopah. You can call in at 1-888-585-9008, room 255-432-824, and press *9 to speak. The agenda includes a vote on a forensic audit of county finances, a special prosecutor to look into the death of an inmate in the Nye County Jail, a jail food contract, solar project reviews in Amargosa Valley, a Pahrump firefighters' insurance hearing, trail grants and the possible sale of the Amargosa Valley Science and Technology Park.

The Nye County Board of Commissioners holds a regular meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, in Tonopah. It is a joint meeting. The same commissioners also sit as the highway board, the licensing and liquor board, the board of health, the governing body for the towns of Pahrump, Beatty, Gabbs and Manhattan, and the Pahrump Pool District trustees.
If the board does not finish, items may carry over to 8:30 a.m. the next day. Public hearings keep their set times. Other items may move.

Town of Pahrump items
At 10 a.m., a public hearing on a memorandum with International Association of Fire Fighters Local 4068. It would change Article 27, Insurance, in the 2026–2029 agreement. The board may adopt, change or reject it.
Also: the Town of Pahrump's year-end financial report for fiscal year 2025–2026; a report on July and August 2026 revenue and spending; and a proposed net budget increase for Animal Services for fiscal year 2027.
Consent agenda (usually passed in one vote)
Two agreements with the Bureau of Land Management so the county can take part in federal environmental reviews: one for the Silver Star Solar 1 project in Amargosa Valley, and one for the Mosey Solar Project, partly in Nye County and partly in Clark County.
Two Pahrump road items for future road work: a restrictive covenant with a property owner, and a dedication of road right-of-way fronting South Powerline Road from Valley Electric Association.
Grants: $9,486.75 in state Affordable Housing Trust Funds for rent, utility and deposit help for people at risk of homelessness, with no county match. A state Recreational Trails Program amendment adding $180,750 for the Northside Trailhead, for a total of $210,241. Another adding $85,907.80 for the Southside Trailhead, for a total of $111,957.80, and extending it to Sept. 30, 2027.
Also: minutes from July 7, 2026, and adopting Federal Highway Administration procurement procedures for engineering work funded through NDOT's Local Public Agency program. Any commissioner can pull a consent item for discussion.
Big votes
Forensic audit: a proposal to hire an independent, Nevada-qualified accounting or auditing firm to do a forensic audit of county finances and contracts, with a separate review of the Simkins Park Splash Pad and Pahrump Fairgrounds projects, to look for inconsistencies, waste or fraud.
Special prosecutor: the District Attorney asks the board to appoint Frank Coumou, Esq., as special prosecutor to investigate, and take legal action if warranted, involving the death of an inmate in the custody of the Nye County Jail. The contract would be up to $10,000 from the General Fund.
Jail food: the Sheriff asks the board to award RFP No. 2026-02, Jail Food Services, to Trinity Services Group, paid from the General Fund, or reject the proposals.
Sheriff equipment: replacing essential expired equipment and other gear for deputies, paid with Local Assistance and Tribal Consistency Funds (LATCF).
Phone line: a review of what the commission meeting teleconference line costs, and whether to keep it.
Money and budget
Finance items cover the August year-to-date numbers for fiscal year 2027, the Sheriff's general-fund and jail-fund budgets, a report on savings from the Early Employee Separation Program, the Animal Services budget increase, and how to assign unallocated LATCF money.
Land, energy and other items
Copper Rays Solar: the board will set a date, time and place for a public hearing on Bill No. 2026-18, a development agreement between Nye County and Copper Rays Solar, LLC. No vote on the agreement itself is listed for Oct. 6.
Broadband: a construction and right-of-way access agreement with Valley Communications Association, Inc.
Amargosa Valley Science and Technology Park: possible direction to staff to consider selling it.
Also: a request from the Central Nevada Historical Society to build an addition to the Central Nevada Museum; a USDA Rural Development presentation on its programs; and Proclamation P2026-07 recognizing November 2026 as National American Indian Heritage Month.
