Nye County is asking attorneys and law firms to send letters of interest, with their qualifications, to provide public defense. Public defenders represent people charged with crimes who a court has found cannot afford a lawyer.
The work covers the 5th Judicial District Court and the justice courts in Beatty, Pahrump and Tonopah. The county wants independent attorneys or firms to be primary counsel for those courts.
Each contract is up to $200,000 a year, depending on qualifications, paid in equal quarterly payments. Contract attorneys are independent contractors and get no county benefits.
