[HIGH] RECALL ALERT: 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid: motor generator ECU error can cut drive power at higher speeds

HIGH (orange). Toyota told NHTSA that if the plug-in-hybrid system shuts down, “there can be a loss of motive power while the vehicle is being driven at a higher speed, increasing the risk of a crash” (campaign 26V659000).

HIGH (orange). Toyota told NHTSA that if the plug-in-hybrid system shuts down, “there can be a loss of motive power while the vehicle is being driven at a higher speed, increasing the risk of a crash” (campaign 26V659000).

Toyota is recalling 30,978 model-year 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid vehicles (NHTSA campaign 26V659000, Toyota recall 26TA22). The motor generator ECU (MG-ECU) may not complete motor initialization correctly, so the motor control mode used at higher speeds can be unavailable. When the vehicle reaches a speed that needs that mode, warning lights illuminate and the plug-in-hybrid system may enter a fail-safe driving mode or shut down. A shutdown can cause loss of motive power at higher speed. Production dates: July 22, 2025 – August 19, 2026. Toyota reports 38 U.S. Field Technical Reports and 58 warranty claims related or possibly related to this condition as of September 30, 2026.

What to do: check your VIN now. If warning lights appear or you lose motive power, pull over safely and contact a Toyota dealer. Dealers will update the ECU software free of charge. Owner letters are expected starting November 22, 2026 (through December 6, 2026). Toyota: 1-800-331-4331 (26TA22). NHTSA hotline: 1-888-327-4236. No do-not-drive or park-outside advisory has been set.
