CRITICAL (red) — Volkswagen told NHTSA that on certain 2023–2026 ID.4 vehicles “the high voltage battery may fail and lead to a vehicle fire,” and that “a vehicle fire increases the risk of injury.”

Volkswagen Group of America filed NHTSA campaign 26V630000 (Volkswagen 93EX) covering 22,524 model-year 2023–2026 ID.4 electric SUVs built from January 2023 through February 2025. Volkswagen’s report says the root cause is unknown, but that certain charging profiles combined with a state of charge above 80% may trigger thermal propagation in the high-voltage battery. A repair is still under development. Until it is ready, owners are advised to charge to no more than 80%. Interim owner letters are expected to mail November 27, 2026. There is no do-not-drive or park-outside warning marked on the filing.

What to do: Check your VIN for campaign 26V630000. If your ID.4 is included, limit charging to 80% and call Volkswagen at 1-800-893-5298 (recall 93EX) with questions. NHTSA hotline: 1-888-327-4236.
