Travis W. Atkins’s Iraq card closes on June 1, 2007, near Abu Samak. As a staff sergeant with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry, 10th Mountain Division, he engaged insurgents during a dismounted patrol; when one detonated a suicide vest, Atkins tackled and pinned the attacker, absorbing the blast and saving the soldiers beside him. The Medal of Honor citation and unit after-action records fix the date, place, and result. He was killed in the explosion.
