Amos Roy Hutchins was born in Aliceville, Alabama, on June 26, 1929, the only son of Lee Roy and Martha Ellen Hutchins. Sharecropping took the family from Pickens County into Mississippi. He finished Pontotoc High School, left the Mississippi National Guard on July 5, 1949, and enlisted in the Army the next day. By early August 1950 he was a light-weapons corporal in B Company, 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry, holding a hard bend of the Naktong on the Pusan Perimeter.
On the night of August 5–6 a North Korean battalion slipped through a gap and hit the regiment from behind. The 1st Battalion went out to clear them. Hutchins was reported wounded and missing in that fight. His name later appeared on a POW blackboard in a Seoul schoolhouse. He never reached a prison camp. Recovery teams have not brought his body home.
DPAA profile a0Jt000000Aa0UfEAJ still lists him Unaccounted For, analytical category Active Pursuit. He is on the Courts of the Missing in Honolulu and on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall. An administrative finding of death is not a recovered grave.
