John E. Wool was already a Regular inspector general when the war with Mexico opened. He organized and marched a volunteer column out of San Antonio toward Chihuahua, then joined Zachary Taylor’s army in time for Buena Vista on February 22–23, 1847. Army reports credit his cool handling of the line when Santa Anna’s larger force pressed the American left and center — dates and ground fixed in the Official Records of that campaign, not later folklore.
War of 1812 wounds, Fortress Monroe command in 1861, and New York retirement sit outside this card. The register keeps the Mexican War chapter: Chihuahua march and Buena Vista.
