Henry W. Lawton entered 1898 already a decorated Regular from the Civil War and the Geronimo campaign. As major general of volunteers commanding the 2nd Division of Shafter’s V Corps in Cuba, he took El Caney on July 1, 1898 — a dated fight in V Corps reports that opened the San Juan Heights approach to Santiago. Transferred to the Philippines, he stayed in field command until Filipino rifle fire killed him near San Mateo on December 19, 1899.
