Nelson A. Miles’s Spanish–American War card is Puerto Rico and the Commanding General’s desk, not only the Civil War brevets that made his name earlier. In July–August 1898, as Commanding General of the Army, he led the Puerto Rico expedition that landed at Guánica and pushed inland while Santiago and Manila campaigns ran on other maps — movements dated in War Department expedition reports. He held the Army’s top billet through the short war’s land phase.
