Zebulon M. Pike’s War of 1812 card closes at York, not on the Rocky Mountain trail that later named a peak. As brigadier general with Dearborn’s Lake Ontario force, he led the landing columns that took the Upper Canada capital on April 27, 1813. After the British magazine exploded, Pike was mortally wounded among the American troops still on the ground — the date and place fixed in Army returns and contemporary Navy/Army correspondence from the expedition.
