Daniel J. “Dan” Daly already held two Medals of Honor (Boxer Rebellion 1900; Haiti 1915) when the 6th Marines reached France. In June 1918 around Belleau Wood and later Aisne-Marne fighting he served as a gunnery sergeant in the 73rd Company, earning the Navy Cross and the Army Distinguished Service Cross for leading under fire — citations that name dates and ground rather than later legend. The Marine Corps History Division file keeps the unit and the decorations in parallel.
Earlier China and Haiti awards are separate rolls. This register lists the 1918 6th Marines chapter: Belleau Wood sector, Aisne-Marne, Navy Cross / DSC. Daly retired as a sergeant major and died in Queens in 1937; he is buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery. The Marine Corps archival portrait on Wikimedia Commons is public domain.
