Who this is for

This paper is for the person who will search “September 29 Jack Smith Senate hearing” and land on a register instead of a pamphlet. Senate calendars and the Committee on the Judiciary list a full-committee hearing for Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., in Room SH-216 of the Hart Senate Office Building. The Senate Press Photographers’ Gallery lists the same hour and room and names the witness as Jack Smith, former special counsel, Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. Congress.gov’s committee schedule and Senate.gov’s hearings list carry the same appointment.

That is the paper. If the committee postpones, the new notice replaces this clock. This paper will not invent the spare date.

What the posted title is, and what it is not

The committee calendar titles the hearing “Oversight of Jack Smith’s Abuse of Authority and the Targeting of Republicans and Related Matters.” That string is a committee product. A register copies it because it is how a stranger finds the listing. Copying a title is not adopting the adjectives. Abuse is a charge the title makes. Targeting is a charge the title makes. Related matters is a residual clause. None of those three is a finding this publisher enters.

An oversight hearing is how a Senate committee puts a former officer under oath, or at least under lights, and builds a record. The record may later be cited in a floor speech, a referral, or a campaign mailer. Those later uses are other files. They are not 9:00 a.m. in SH-216.

A hearing is not a verdict

Special-counsel work is a Department of Justice instrument. A Senate hearing is an Article I instrument. A criminal case, if any remains or remains on appeal, is an Article III instrument. Keep the three jobs apart the way this register keeps statute, register, and hash apart. Testimony in Hart 216 does not vacate an indictment. Silence in Hart 216 does not prove one. Applause in the hallway is not a roll call.

A current event on this site is not a precinct. This hearing is a current event. It is still not a precinct. District of Columbia is the geography of the room. It is not a county door in Oregon, Virginia, or West Virginia.

Judiciary also uses Dirksen rooms; this clock is Hart 216. Do not move the hearing to a prettier facade. Ornament on the Capitol campus is not a finding.

How a stranger uses the hour

Open hearings are listed because the public may watch. Committees stream. C-SPAN and the committee page are the usual pipes. A resident who cannot enter SH-216 can still hear the record being made. Hearing the record is not joining the committee. Quoting a five-second clip is not the transcript. The official file, when the committee posts testimony and, later, a printed hearing, is the file a later reader should prefer.

If the witness does not appear, that absence is itself a line in the record. This paper does not predict the chair. It dates the appointment.

What this paper will not do

It will not rank parties. It will not call the hearing a trial, and it will not call a boycott a confession. It will not fold this hour into November 3.
