George Gordon Meade

George G. Meade took command of the Army of the Potomac only days before Gettysburg. From July 1–3, 1863 he held the federal line on Cemetery Ridge and the Round Tops against Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia — dispositions and telegrams preserved in the Official Records and Meade’s headquarters papers. He kept that army through the Overland Campaign and Petersburg while Grant directed the wider war from the same headquarters train.
