John Buford’s Civil War reputation rests on the morning of July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg. Commanding the 1st Cavalry Division, he screened west of town, chose the ridges covering the federal approach, and fought a delaying action against Heth’s infantry long enough for Reynolds’s I Corps to come up — sequence dated in cavalry returns and the Official Records, not later fiction. Illness forced him off the field that autumn; he died in Washington on December 16, 1863, shortly after a major-general brevet.
