Oliver O. Howard’s Civil War register turns on Gettysburg and the western marches, not the later Freedmen’s Bureau alone. At Gettysburg, July 1–3, 1863, he commanded the XI Corps on the federal right and center as Meade’s army held Cemetery Ridge — dispositions preserved in the Official Records. He had already lost his right arm at Fair Oaks in 1862. Later he led the Army of the Tennessee with Sherman through Georgia and the Carolinas.
