William T. Sherman’s Civil War file is a string of dated western campaigns, not a single nickname. At Shiloh in April 1862 he held a battered division; under Grant he helped seal Vicksburg in 1863; in 1864, commanding the Military Division of the Mississippi, he took Atlanta (September 2) and then cut a living-off-the-land march from Atlanta to Savannah — movements ordered in writing and tracked in War Department telegrams. The Carolinas campaign of early 1865 closed the same operational arc.
Louisiana seminary years and postwar general-in-chief duty sit elsewhere. This register keeps Atlanta, the March to the Sea, and the Carolinas as the hinge: armies, dates, results.
