Winfield Scott Hancock made his Civil War reputation holding and choosing ground for the Army of the Potomac. On July 1, 1863, arriving at Gettysburg after Reynolds fell, he selected Cemetery Hill as the federal rally line; on July 2–3 his II Corps held the center against Longstreet’s assaults and Pickett’s Charge — wounds and dispositions dated in the Official Records and Meade’s headquarters papers. Later Overland and Petersburg fighting kept him in corps command until illness forced relief.
West Point, Mexican War service, and the 1880 Democratic presidential nomination are other shelves. This register lists Gettysburg II Corps command: dates, hill, and the July 3 stand. Hancock died on Governor’s Island in 1886 and is buried in Norristown, Pennsylvania. The Brady-Handy portrait on Wikimedia Commons is public domain. He is not marked missing.
