Nose gunner on B-17G 42-5807 lost October 4, 1943 after a Frankfurt mission; North Sea crash near Vlissingen; eight of ten crew still unaccounted for. Memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten. Birth date and Newark, New Jersey, from Fields of Honor case 14575. Non-recoverable is not a recovered grave.
Mario Suozzo was born in Newark, New Jersey, on May 22, 1920, and enlisted there in September 1942. By the fall of 1943 he was a staff sergeant in the nose of a Fortress with the 511th Bombardment Squadron of the 351st Bombardment Group — the station work out of Northamptonshire that put young gunners over Germany and then tried to bring them home across the Channel.
On October 4 he flew nose gunner on B-17G 42-5807 against Frankfurt. Flak and fighters hit the formation on the return. The bomber went into the North Sea east of Ellewoutsdijk near Vlissingen. Two men from that crew were later recovered and identified. Suozzo was not.
DPAA profile a0Jt000001nzSKhEAM still reads Unaccounted For, analytical category Non-recoverable. He is on the Walls of the Missing at Margraten beside the rest of that unrecovered crew. Paperwork can close a file. It cannot invent a grave from Westerschelde water.
