The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) put out its weekly Kansas City metro highway update on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026. It lists closures and projects across three Kansas counties: Johnson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte.

The one new item this week is a short one. The eastbound I-70 exit ramp to 5th Street in Kansas City, Kansas, closes Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 13 and 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for maintenance. In Leavenworth, the good news is that all K-92 lanes at 20th Street are open again.

The longer closures carry on. In Johnson County, the Midland Drive ramp to northbound I-435 stays closed through Dec. 21 and two I-35 ramps at Gardner Road stay closed through Dec. 15. In Wyandotte County, U.S. 69 (18th Street) remains fully closed between Kansas Avenue and Ruby Avenue until fall 2027 for the new Kansas River bridge.

Johnson County

  • Midland Drive ramp to northbound I-435: closed through Dec. 21 for bridge work on I-435 at Little Mill Creek. Detour marked.
  • U.S. 69 (Metcalf Avenue), 61st to 56th streets: single left lane closed both ways through Nov. 1. No left turns and no crossing the median.
  • I-35 at Gardner Road: the southbound I-35 exit ramp to Gardner Road and the Gardner Road ramp to northbound I-35 are closed through Dec. 15 for the bridge replacement. Detours marked.
  • Metcalf Avenue bridge over Johnson Drive: rehab project, weekdays 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The southbound exit ramp to Metcalf Lane is being removed. Finish expected December 2026.
  • I-435 at Little Mill Creek: bridge deck repair. In phases two and three, northbound traffic shifts into the southbound lanes head-to-head through median crossovers. Finish expected December 2026.
  • Gardner Road bridge over I-35: full replacement with turn lanes, shoulders, lighting, sidewalks and a realigned 191st Street. Weekday lane restrictions are limited to 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Finish expected December 2027.
  • U.S. 69 widening, 103rd to 151st streets, and the 167th Street interchange: the 69Express toll lanes opened in February 2026. Day and night lane and ramp closures continue, with the whole project expected done by the end of 2026.

Leavenworth County

  • K-92 (Spruce Street) at 20th Street: all lanes have reopened. Intersection grading and surfacing work continues weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and should wrap up in early October.

Wyandotte County

  • Eastbound I-70 exit ramp to 5th Street: closed Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 13 and 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for maintenance. This is new this week.
  • K-5 over the Union Pacific Railroad, south of Sunshine Road: one lane closed each way through Oct. 16 for the bridge deck replacement, which should finish in October.
  • U.S. 69 (18th Street), Kansas Avenue to Ruby Avenue: fully closed, with the Kansas Avenue and Ruby Avenue ramps closed, until fall 2027 while the 18th Street Bridge over the Kansas River is replaced. Detours are marked.
